For its 10th anniversary, TRANSNUT invites you to a scientific morning on May 12, 2014, on the theme of 'Food systems, Nutrition Transition and Health'. TRANSNUT (for ‘nutrition transition’) is the only WHO Collaborating Centre for Nutrition in North America. Its main research focus is the nutrition transition and the resulting double burden of malnutrition in developing countries, that is, the coexistence of nutritional deficiencies and problems of ’overnutrition’ such as obesity and diabetes.

The global pandemic of obesity and related chronic diseases is a major public health problem of the 21st century. It is connected with significant social, economic and political changes that disrupt local food systems, particularly in low and middle-income countries, that are increasingly integrated into the global food system. Developing countries are bearing the brunt of this nutrition transition.

Renowned international speakers will address the transformations of the food systems and their impact on the nutrition transition globally.

After a brief overview of TRANSNUT’s 10 year history by its director Dr. Hélène Delisle, professor of nutrition at the University of Montreal, Dr. Enrique Jacoby, Senior Advisor at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), will present the epidemiological profile of obesity and chronic diseases in the Americas, highlighting the role of the WHO collaborating centres for nutrition in the prevention efforts.

Dr. Carlos Augusto Monteiro, Director of the Centre for Epidemiological Studies on Health and Nutrition, School of Public Health, University of São Paulo (Brazil), will discuss his new hypothesis on the role of the excessive consumption of ultra- processed food as a major determinant of obesity.
