The summer school on diplomacy and statecraft will center around the question : how does diplomacy affect international relations independent of other important factors such as power ? Do diplomats matter ? What is it about diplomacy that makes agreements more or less easy to reach, helps avoid war, or allows those who excel at it to do better than they might have otherwise ? What makes good or bad diplomat ? We will draw on insights from a variety of disciplines (including but not limited to psychology, sociology, economics, and neuroscience) to explore the phenomenon of diplomacy, going in-depth into cases such as the end of the Cold War and the appeasement of Nazi Germany.
