Résumé: Recent work in the Ragogna Group has centred on developing inorganic heterocycles, specifically in the pursuit of 'aromatic' analogues composed solely of inorganic elements. These efforts have led to the preparation of 4-membered rings with P2Ch2 cores (Ch = S, Se) and we have explored the chemistry of the sulfur derivative in some detail. A central building block in the R2P2S2 ring is the low coordinate, P(III) R-P=S unit, which can be accessed by gentle heating of the parent 4-membered ring. The liberated phosphinidene sulfide intermediate can be utilized in a variety of onwards reactions, most notably in preparing new inorganic and organic/inorganic hybrid rings. The results of this work underscore the many 'faces' of phosphinidene sulfides where they exhibit olefinic (left), zwitterionic (centre) and carbenic modes of reactivity. An overview of the relevant background, our trials and tribulations of getting the chemistry done (well, Cam’s trials and tribulations mostly) and key results will be presented.
