Résumé : The percentage of women earning bachelor’s degrees in physics in the United States has stagnated at approximately 20% for the past decade, despite increasing numbers of students graduating with physics and other STEM degrees. The high school / college transition is critical: nearly half of high school physics students are young women, but only one-fifth of physics majors at college entrance are women. The STEP UP project is mobilizing thousands of high school teachers to increase the representation of women in physics, which is many students’ first and last exposure to physics. Teachers implement two lessons for use by high school physics teachers: Careers in Physics and Women in Physics, as well as use the Everyday Actions guide to engage students throughout the year. An overview of the project, including strategies and results from the Fall 2017 pilot study conducted and the Fall 2018 experimental study, will be presented.

Bio : Laird Kramer is the Founding Director of the STEM Transformation Institute and a Professor of Physics at Florida International University.

Laird Kramer’s work focuses on facilitating institutional change through implementation of, and research on, evidence-based educational practices. He led transformation of the undergraduate physics experience at FIU, creating more well-prepared majors through the implementation Modeling Instruction-based studio physics courses, establishment of student-centric methodologies, and establishment of a high school/university research and learning community. His commitment to the fostering change across the STEM disciplines began in 2008, when he launched the Learning Assistant (LA) program in physics that rapidly spread into mathematics and the sciences. Now the largest program in the nation, FIU’s LA program now supports over 320 LAs working across more than 10 STEM disciplines impacting over 14,000 student enrollments each semester. The LA Program led to the launching of FIUteach, a high fidelity replication of the UTeach secondary science and mathematics teacher preparation program that has grown to the one of the largest program across 46 sites. These efforts have led to the STEM Transformation Institute that situates FIU as a STEM education laboratory for research, development and dissemination of inclusive models that will transform institutional educational practices in order to meet the national need for qualified STEM professionals.

He serves as project director on two Howard Hughes Medical Institute Science Education grants, the FIUteach project, and serves a leadership role on multiple National Science Foundation grants. He was a member of the National Academics of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine’s “Strengthening Research Experiences for Undergraduate STEM Students” Committee.”
