One of the central questions of astronomy over the next two decades will be the frequency and chemical makeup of terrestrial planets near the habitable zones of nearby stars.  I will present some of my work to jump start these answers over the next few years in novel ways, primarily through the leveraging of white dwarfs as probes of both the chemical makeup of planets and as potential sites for habitable planets.  I will also discuss how current and future NASA missions, from HST to TESS, will play a key role in this work.
