This talk will discuss the role of translation in news transmission. It will survey the role of translation from the origins of newspapers in 17th century Europe, with particular reference to England, Spain and Scandinavia. The professionalization of journalism served to emphasize the importance of translation in news production, as in the case of foreign correspondents and news agencies, and even more so after the advent of the internet. The European news portal Euronews will be used as an example of the ever increasing role of translation in news writing
