Scientific and technical translation comprises a continuum of subject fields, registers, text types and varieties, as well as functional approaches. In this context, medical translation represents one of many subject fields, featuring diversity across the Sci-Tech spectrum.

Scientific and technical translation is practiced as a significant sector of the translation industry and as such is closely associated with localization, translation tools applications, and the implementation of industry standards. English as the language of science profoundly affects translation directionality and the potential for heterofunctional solutions. Unmet needs for translation into a wide range of mother tongues is a driving force for language planning in support of knowledge transfer to all levels of society, but is predicated on efforts to overcome the digital divide.
